Around the time when the cicadas start chirping, there is a flower which starts blooming in ponds at temples. The theme for this occasion is Lotus flower, which has been beloved by people since ancient times.

Lotus flowers bloom after the end of the rainy season to August. They are revered for their appearance of blooming purely even in muddy water and holding water droplets like pearls on their leaves. Symbolically, they are seen as a representation of enlightenment and as a flower which resonate with Buddhist teachings. When we place the noses in a lotus flower, we are surrounded by a gentle, clear fragrance. There are many temples which are famous for Lotus. People like to visit them to see and smell Lotus flowers.
In our “Genji series” inspired by “The Tale of Genji”, there is an incense named “Hachisu”. The word “Hachisu” in “The Tale of Genji” originates from a poem read by Kaoru when he visited Ukifune’s place. In this poem, “Hachisu” refers to the lotus flower. And the incense fragrance evokes imagery expanded from that poem.
